A glass of kesar milk is about 150 kcal, home-style cold coffee about 160, badam milk about 190, a banana or mango shake about 210 to 230 and a café chocolate milkshake about 400. Here are 12 milk drinks and shakes, per glass.

Our approximate estimates. Toned milk is counted at about 58 kcal per 100 ml and sugar at about 20 kcal per teaspoon. Glass size, the kind of milk and any ice cream change the numbers.

What the numbers show

A glass of toned milk (200 ml) is about 115 kcal, so every drink here starts there. What decides the rest is the sugar, the fruit, the nuts and the ice cream. Two spoons of sugar in cold coffee add about 40 kcal. A banana adds about 95 and a cup of mango about 110.

Café versions run higher because the glass is bigger (350 ml against 250) and because ice cream, syrup and chocolate sauce go in. Thandai is heavier than it looks because of the nuts, seeds and sugar blended into the milk.

Comparing with a roti

Easy way to read it: a shake is a meal-sized number in a glass, so it helps to know the size and the sugar. For cold drinks and juices see our guide to calories in cold drinks.
