Our approximate estimates. Brands, sugar added at the stall and glass size change the numbers; check the label on a packaged drink. Sugar is counted at about 20 kcal per teaspoon.
Almost all of the calories in a cold drink are sugar. A 330 ml can of cola holds roughly 7 teaspoons, which is where its 140 kcal comes from. Fresh juice has no added sugar but a glass uses several fruits, so it is not light either. Plain water, soda, chaas and coconut water are near the bottom of the list because they carry little or no sugar.
Stall drinks vary the most: two spoons of sugar in nimbu pani is about 45 kcal, and a larger glass with four spoons is about 85. Asking for less sugar changes the number more than switching drinks.
Easy way to read it: a drink is quick to finish and easy to forget, so it helps to know the number. For hot drinks see our guide to calories in chai, coffee and lassi.
