What the numbers show

The difference between the two plates is mostly breads, rice and creamy gravies, and the dessert round. Butter naan (about 320 kcal) is the same as a little over two and a half rotis, and a veg biryani plate (about 450 kcal) is more than three. Stacking naan, biryani and two curries on the same plate is what takes it past 2,000.

The light plate is just an example: it has one bread, one dal, a dry vegetable and one dessert. Grilled items such as paneer tikka are drier than the gravies, but paneer is still rich at about 250 kcal for four pieces.

Comparing with a roti

Easy way to read it: walk the whole buffet before you pick, and choose which one or two heavy items you actually want. For restaurant meals see our guide to eating out.

A fair caveat

These are approximate numbers for typical servings, not exact ones, and they are not advice about what you should eat or drink. If you have a health condition or a target from a doctor or dietitian, follow that instead of a general table.
