What to Eat Before and After the Gym: Indian Food Ideas

General information; needs vary by person.

Banana, oats, curd, paneer, dal and water for gym nutrition

Your total food intake across the day matters more than a perfect minute-by-minute gym schedule. Before training, choose food that gives you energy and feels comfortable. After training, eat a normal meal or snack with protein and carbohydrate.

Before the gym

If you have a few hours, a regular meal such as rice and dal, or roti with paneer and vegetables, may work. If you have less time and feel hungry, try a banana, toast or a small bowl of curd with fruit. Avoid a very heavy meal just before exercise if it upsets your stomach. Tolerance varies.

After the gym

Have a meal that includes protein and carbohydrate: dal-rice with curd, eggs with roti and fruit, paneer or tofu with rice, or a milk-and-fruit snack followed by dinner. You do not need a protein shake if food meets your needs. The exact amount depends on body size, training and goals.

Hydration

Drink water before and after exercise and during sessions as needed, especially in heat. Longer or very intense training can change fluid and fuel needs. A typical short gym session does not require a sugary sports drink for everyone.

For muscle gain or weight loss

Strength training needs enough overall energy and protein to support recovery. If trying to lose weight, avoid under-fuelling so much that training quality or wellbeing suffers. Building muscle takes time, progressive training and adequate rest as well as food.

When to get tailored help

Competitive athletes and people with diabetes, kidney disease or other conditions should seek advice from a qualified sports dietitian or clinician. Supplement claims are often stronger than their evidence.
