Build a balanced bowl
Start with a grain or other staple, add dal, beans, egg, tofu, paneer or another suitable protein food, and include vegetables. Fruit or curd can sit alongside. The amounts that suit you depend on appetite and individual needs.
Seven combinations
- Rice, rajma and salad: add cucumber, carrot and lemon to cooked rajma and rice.
- Roti bowl: tear roti over chana, roasted vegetables and plain curd.
- Millet and dal: pair cooked millet with moong dal, greens and a spoon of chutney.
- Curd rice and chickpeas: add cooked chickpeas and a side of vegetables.
- Egg and vegetable rice: use a fully cooked egg, rice and sautéed vegetables.
- Tofu or paneer bowl: add tofu or paneer to dalia and mixed vegetables.
- Khichdi bowl: combine dal and grain with vegetables, then serve with curd.
Make weekday lunches easier
Cook one grain and one dal or bean dish ahead, then change vegetables and toppings through the week. Store cooked foods promptly and follow safe refrigeration guidance. Keep chutneys and crunchy toppings separate until serving if you prefer their texture.
